Here is the second blog post of the series: So you are pretty excited about deciding to study in UK. Now what? The real thing starts now. Things you will need to keep ready with yourself before applying to any university in UK.

IELTS - International English Language Testing System

As the name says, IELTS is a proven English test. It is recognized by the universities and if English is not your first language then you will need to give IELTS to get admission into a UK university. There are exceptions though depending on your course. My friend who joined Warwick didn't have to give IELTS as she was doing Bachelors in Math. There are few art universities in UK that don't require IELTS but other than them mostly all others require. A minimum of 6.0 band is required by all the universities. IELTS is held around four times a month unlike SAT.
There are two types of IELTS test:

Academic Test: If you are doing some course in English/literature or whatsoever.
General Training: If you are doing some course that doesn't have English as a major (Arts, Engineering and so on).

IELTS Test: Candidates are tested on all four language skills - Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing. In the listening test you will hear a recording and after than the questions would be given to you by the examiner. In speaking test, you will come face-to-face with an examiner and it would go like a normal conversation.

Test Format: In both the two tests, listening and speaking modules are same but reading and writing modules are different. Listening, Reading and Writing would be completed in a single day while Speaking might be taken or another day or same day which depends on your centre.

Suggestions: For practice materials some of my friends opted for book and started studying 2 weeks back from the date of exam. They used Barron's book which is pretty good. They all got 6.5-7.0 bands.

Note: You can register for an IELTS test which is after 7 days unlike SAT where you have to register a month back.

UCAS is a common application for UK universities through which you can send your application to five universities or six, if lucky. Don't even bother sending direct application when you can do five in one go. You can register anytime for UCAS, but you can send it only after mid-September. If you are applying for 2010 then you can only send money after September 2009. Till then you can keep your entire essay, recommendations, transcripts and other things ready.

This is going to be a series of posts in which I will give you a step by step guide of applying to universities in United Kingdom.

So why United Kingdom?

There are many reasons students choose to study in UK, rather than other places.

Reason #1: Fees

This has to be a major factor for any student or parent when deciding a university to study abroad. International students pay fees up to three times more than the native students. Saddening, yes. On looking under the covers, I found that it is because international students haven't paid anything towards the UK government i.e. tax, while the native students/parents are paying tax each year. The 60% expenses of the universities come from international students.

United Kingdom is relatively cheaper than its other counterparts. A 4 year course in USA might cost anywhere around $30,000-$40,000 while in UK, a 4 year course will range from12,000-18,000 ($19,800-$29,700). Below is average fees comparison between United States and United Kingdom.

Reason #2 Living Expenses

Living expenses in USA will set you back at anywhere from $10,000-$12,000 (depends on your style of living). Below is the breakdown of the annual expenses.

• Annual Rent: This will be around $4500-$5000 annually - taking 10 months into consideration.
• Yum! Yum! (per month): Average food cost will range between $300-$400 - this again depends on your habits. Try to avoid midnight snacks.
• Telephone/Internet (per month): This will range anywhere from $50-$100.
• Laundry (per month): It would be great if you could do on your own, but if you are too lazy, then this will cost you from $50-$70.
• ± $100 for other various expenses

United Kingdom

Living expenses in UK will range from £5000-£6000 annually depending on you.

• Annual Rent: This will be around £2400-£2500 depending on the university. The university where I applied for animation (Bournemouth, Teesside and Herts), I was offered the above figures and some even went as low as 1900.
• Yum! Yum! (per month): Dah! Learn cooking. If you are going to buy your food it will cost you from £100-£120.
• Telephone/Internet (per month): This will cost you anywhere from 15-20. Don't make too many long distance calls.
• Laundry (per month): This should cost you from £20-£25.

Reason #3: Time-saving Degrees

Many degrees (MA, to be exact) can be completed within a year or maximum two years. People studying arts can opt for these time saving degrees and spend a year or two working in the industry rather than in college in USA. As they say, what you learn in three months in the industry is huge as compared to what you learn in a university.

Reason #4: Work Opportunities

A international student studying in UK is allowed to work up to 20 hours in a week during his university period and fulltime after graduating. This is a great way to repay if you have taken a student loan or even saving for family or yourself. But before starting any job, please consult your international coordinator as there are few universities that don't allow students to work during their university period.

Reason #5: Multicultural

Scholarship Screwup #3: Cry Me a River

Hardships: We all have them, right? If you read as
many scholarship applications as I do, you'd certainly think so.
With college costs spiraling upward every year and families pinched
for cash to pay for it all, students are going all-out to make sure
the committees understand how rough they have it.

But the truth is, we don't all have hardships. We're all busy, we
all have pesky annoyances and long to-do lists, that's for sure.
But we don't all have true hardships. Let me clarify the
difference:

* If your parents were killed when you were a baby and you were
raised in an orphanage, that's a unique hardship. If you were
raised in Suburbia and had to share your 2,600 square-foot house
with three wild and crazy brothers, that's not.

* If you had to get a job at age 8 to help your family pay rent,
that's a hardship. If you had to get a job at 16 to pay for your
first car, that's not.

* If you were hit by a BMW and finished your senior year
telecommuting from the intensive care unit, that's a hardship. If
you had to take a part-time job at the hospital to fix the body
damage you did to your BMW by hitting that other person, that's not.

Making sense yet? If you mention a hardship in your scholarship
application, be sure it's really a hardship. One thing you've got
to remember when you're applying for scholarships is that
scholarship committees receive thousands of essays every week from
students with thousands of different backgrounds, many of whom come
from Third World countries in Africa and Asia. Some have led
extremely difficult lives and have overcome obstacles so outlandish
that Americans can't even comprehend them. These are the type of
stories that scholarship judges are accustomed to reading. By
comparison, American student essays sound a little, well, spoiled
and whiny. Here are a couple of examples of people with actual
hardships vs. people who are just very busy:

Britney from Eden Prairie: "After running 3-5 miles every night at
track practice, sometimes my body is so exhausted when I go home
that I can barely finish my homework without falling asleep at my
desk."

Bungu from Ethiopia: "After running seven miles to get to school in
the morning, I am so exhausted that I can barely stay awake. If we
had desks, I would fall asleep in mine, but we don't; we study on
the cold dirt floor."

Molly from Oak Park: "As a senior, of course, I have an extremely
hectic schedule. Of course I'm in school all day Monday through
Friday, but on Tuesday and Thursday nights I have advanced piano
lessons for 90 minutes as soon as I get home from school, on
Wednesdays I have church group and I work the breakfast shift at
Burger King on Saturdays and Sundays. I endure this difficult life
because I know that it will pay off in the end."

Mbutu from Eritrea: "On Tuesdays, I walk 12 miles to the refugee
camp at sunrise to receive our large bag of rice and flour from the
U.N. so that my village can eat. Because the bag weighs 45 pounds,
it takes all day and night Wednesday to return home with the bag.
On Thursday, I pass out from exhaustion while my neighbors begin to
cook flatbread for the children..." And so on.

If it sounds like I'm making light of other people's misery, I'm
not. These are pretty much spot-on descriptions of some of the
essays I've read. So if you haven't had to overcome insurmountable
odds, that's fine -- that's the case for most of us lucky enough to
be born in the in the United States, at least. But don't go
overboard trying to convince the committee that your life is truly
difficult if, in fact, it's really only busy.

Now, a point of clarification: This doesn't mean that just because
you weren't orphaned by Sudanese warlords at age 9 that you can't
win a scholarship by talking about any challenges you've met. You
can and should talk about those challenges. Judges love to hear
about challenges overcome. Just keep your perspective and resist
the urge to call these challenges "hardships" or something
similarly melodramatic, because trust me -- we've read about every
imaginable type of hardship, and we know and appreciate the
definition of the word.

Maulana Azad Education Foundation was established on the occasion of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s birth centenary. The Foundation was registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860, on 6th July, 1989. The Foundation is a voluntary non-political, nonprofit marking social service organization established to promote education amongst the educationally backward sections of the society. It is funded by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India. The Hon’ble Minister is its Ex-officio President. The aim of the Foundation is to formulate and implement educational schemes and plans for the benefit of the educationally backward minorities in particular and weaker sections in general.

“Maulana Azad National Scholarship Scheme.”

ELIGIBILITY CRITERION / WHO CAN APPLY

i) Only Girl Students belonging to National Minorities, (i.e. Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs) can apply :
ii) Should have secured not less than 55% marks (in aggregate) in the secondary school certificate examination, conducted by any recognized Centre/State Board of Secondary Education. The List of 33 recognized Boards/Councils is given in Annexure-III. This is only qualifying percentage for applying and does not guarantee grant of scholarship which is given to the top eligible applicant based on the quota fixed for the concerned state from amongst the eligible application received from the state.

iii) Family income of the student from all sources should be less than Rs. 1,00,000/- (Rupees one lakh only) in the preceding financial year:

* In case of salaried class, the student must indicate the designation, pay-scale, basic pay and other allowances alongwith total gross & take home emoluments of the parent/guardian. A mere statement saying “Service” will not be acceptable. The student must attach a Salary Certificate or Pension Certificate (in case of retired persons), duly authenticated by controlling authority, of her parent/guardian alongwith the application.
* In case of agriculture/horticulture etc., the students has to mention total land holding with details of irrigated and non-irrigated and other landed property owned by her family alongwith total income of the family. These details will also be mentioned in the affidavit of the parent/guardian (Annexure-II) as well as in the certificate from Revenue authority.
* In case of business class, the student must categorically state the name & type of the business alongwith the total turn over and the total income of family. The same details will also be stated in the Affidavit (Annexure-II) from her parent/guardian.
* Income form all other sources must also be mentioned, specially if mother is also employed.
* It must be noted that all income certificate and statements made by the students in the application is subject to further verification of Maulana Azad Education Foundation. In case of any deliberate discrepancy/concealment of facts, the MAEF may cancel/recover the scholarship granted/released as well as initiate necessary action as per law.
* The income certificate/affidavit (Annexure-II) must be from the parents/guardian’s side and should have been issued from the respective home station. The income certificate issued or affidavit made from the place where the student is studying, as against the home station, will NOT be acceptable (in case of photocopy, it should be attested by Gazetted Officer or Head of Institution).

iv) Should have Confirmed admission in class-XI. Admission Slip issued by the college/school where the student is presently studying and verification of the principal (Annexure-I), in the prescribed proforma must be sent with the application.

v) The University/College/Institute offering admission should be recognized by the Government at the Central or State level or any other competent authority.

vi) It is one time scholarship, and no claim as permanent beneficiary will be entertained. Student once selected for scholarship can not avail the same again.

vii) A student getting a scholarship from any other source would not be eligible for the Scholarship.

viii) The last date for receipt of application in the office of the Maulana Azad Education Foundation is 31st August 2009, which must be adhered to. The application of the scholarship received after 31st August 2009, will not be entertained under any circumstances. MAEF will not be responsible for postal delay in the matter.

ix) An amount of Rs. 12,000/- (Rupees twelve thousand only) would be given to each student. It will be released in two equal installments of Rs. 6000/- each. First installment will be given for class XI and second installment for class XII.

x) The scholarship is given to student passing Xth exam and taking admission in XIth in the year when result of Xth exam is declared. Applications received in subsequent years will not be entertained.

NCERT National Talent Search Examination

National Talent Search Scheme is a flagship activity of the NCERT started in the year 1963. The purpose of the scheme was to identify talented students and nurture their talent. Talent refers to the potentiality that manifests itself in a high level of performance in one or more specialized areas. The scheme, therefore, covers areas like Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Management and Law. It honours and helps talented students by providing financial assistance in the form of a monthly scholarship. For the courses in Basic Sciences, Social Sciences and Commerce, this assistance is provided up to Ph.D. level. For professional courses like Engineering, Medicine, Management and Law this assistance is given only up to Post Graduation. From the selection year 2010, the NCERT will conduct the National Talent Search Examination for students studying in Class VIII only.

1. Scholarships: On the basis of the examination conducted, 1000 scholarships will be awarded for each group of students appearing for Class VIII examinations. The amount of scholarship will be Rs.500/- per month as per NTS rules.

2. Reservation: 15% scholarships will be reserved for students belonging to the SC category, 7.5% scholarships for students belonging to the ST category and 3% for Physically Challenged Group of Students each in respect of the class VIII.

3. Selection: There will be two-stage selection process for award of scholarship. For Stage-I, selection will be done by States/UTs through a written examination. Students who qualify Stage I will be eligible to appear for Stage II examination conducted by NCERT.

4. The States/UTs will also conduct the selection test for National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme along with the Stage-I written examination for NTS.

Important Dates: Dates for Submission of Application Form and conduct of examination are given below:

6. Eligibility: Students of Class VIII studying in recognized schools are eligible to appear for the respective Class VIII Stage I examination conducted by the States/UTs in which the schools are located. There will be no domicile restriction.

7. Examination: The pattern of written examination for Class VIII will be as follows:

• Stage I examination at the State/UT level will comprise two parts, namely (a) Mental Ability Test (MAT) and (b) Scholastic Ability Test (SAT) covering social sciences, sciences and mathematics.

• Stage II examination at the National level will comprise (a) Mental Ability Test (MAT), (b) Scholastic Ability Test (SAT) covering social sciences, sciences and mathematics, (c) Interview. Only those candidates who qualify the written examination at the National Level will be invited for interview.

8. State Quotas: Each State/Union Territory has been allotted a quota to recommend a specific number of candidates for the Stage II examination, the details of which will be made available on NCERT website. However, there will be no State/Union Territory Quota for the final award of scholarship after the Stage II examination. Reservation for SC, ST and physically challenged will be as notified in para 2 above.

9. Application Form: You may contact the State/UT Liaison officer for procuring application form. However, application form can be downloaded from NCERT website also. All correspondence relating to application forms should be addressed to the State Liaison Officers (LOs) whose addresses are given at the end/Website.

10. The completed application form duly signed by Principal of the school should be submitted to the LO/ concerned district official of the State before the last date.

11. Fees: States and Union Territories may notify the fee required (refer NCERT website) which will be paid for the Stage-I examination. However, NCERT does not charge any fee for the Stage-II examination.

12. Announcement of Results: Results of the Stage-I examination will be announced by the respective State Governments/ Union Territories. Results of Stage-II examination will be announced by NCERT.

13. Indian Students Studying Abroad can appear directly for Stage II NTS Examination under conditions prescribed in the NTS brochure for class VIII which is available on the NCERT website. Candidates may fill up relevant items of the Application Form available on the NCERT website and send to the undersigned along with a photocopy of the mark sheet of previous examination latest by March 15, 2010.

Scholarship Screwup #2: Bore Me With Your GPA

Nothing angers the high-ranking students (and their teachers) more
than this one, but I've some bad news for you, and you're not going
to like it. Are you sitting down? OK, here goes:

Your GPA doesn't really matter that much, Chirag. If at
all.

It's ok, I'll give you a minute to let that sink in.

Now, here's why this is true:

A nationwide grade-inflation epidemic over the last 10 years has
killed the significance of a high GPA. Thousands of pages have been
written on this topic over the last 10 years, and I won't rehash
them all here. But I'll summarize:

At some point in the recent past, someone decided that the horror
of seeing the letter "D" or "F" on a report card did much more
long-term damage to a kid than, say, not knowing how to read, write
or spell. Lots of parents agreed, and convinced schools that even
though Johnny still doesn't know what a comma is, he still deserves
a B in English..

Anyhow, the point is this: Nowadays, just about everyone has a GPA
of 3.0 or above. Everyone. So what, you say? Well, that means if
everyone has a similar GPA, then nobody's GPA matters anymore.
That's it, plain and simple - if everyone's GPA is the same (or

Yes, but: I can hear it already: "Yes, but today's students are
smarter than ever! Classes are more advanced, students are better
prepared, and their achievements get more outstanding every day. It
makes sense that the GPAs are higher."

It's absolutely true about the students being smarter than ever,
and the achievements are greater, and all that. The stuff that
today's top students know and master and achieve is just
mind-boggling. Considering the latest generation has been pushed
harder than ever - and earlier than ever - by parents to achieve
great things, it's no surprise. But that just proves the point: if
the best students are even better today than before, then why does
everyone look the same on paper? If it weren't for the grade
inflation phenomenon, the top students would stick out more; but as
it is, they simply don't.

And last but not least, the quality of education in our country
varies so widely that a 4.0 student (or, in some cases, a 5.0 or
higher) at one school might flunk out at another. It also works the
other way; a solid B-C student at a rigorous academic high school
may have the brains to blow through the system with a 4.0 or better
at a weaker school.

Thousands of students apply for our scholarships every month, and
almost every one has a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. That's
fine; it's certainly better than having a GPA of 1.0 or 2.0. But
one phenomenon remains the same: when nearly every applicant shares
a particular characteristic, then that characteristic becomes
unimportant - and that's the story with GPA. It's a commodity now.
Are we saying not to include your GPA? Not necessarily, especially
since many scholarships require you to report it. But don't dwell
on it in your essay, or expect it to carry you to a scholarship.

Scholarship Screwup #1: Thrust Your Religion and Politics Upon Me

I almost didn't include this tip, but it's one
that every applicant needs to hear. Unless the scholarship you're
applying for is sponsored by an explicitly political or religious
organization, you have almost no chance of winning if you write an
essay "taking a side" on controversial issues like abortion,
affirmative action, the Iraq war or any other polarizing issues.
Why not, you ask? Surely it takes guts and conviction to write such
an essay, no?

Yes, it does. And let me be the first to say that I've got a ton of
admiration for people, students and otherwise, who stick to their
convictions and lay their neck out on the line with an unpopular
opinion, regardless of who it might offend.

However, I didn't write my book to tell you how to speak your
mind. I wrote it to show you how to win money from a group of
people who will sit in judgment of you and thousands of your peers
(hey, we're called judges for a reason). And I submit to you that
essays about contentious issues usually don't win.

More practically, consider this very basic truth: the more
contentious the issue you choose to write about, the more likely it
is that one or more committee members will completely disagree with
you. Divisive issues divide, and in all likelihood, you've got no
idea who's even judging your scholarship application, let alone the
personal and political beliefs of those people. But if a judge
happens to hold beliefs that run counter to the ones in your essay,
should that affect their judgment?

In a perfect world, absolutely not. But we don't live in a perfect
world, and if you happen to find one, email me and I'll meet you
there for margaritas for the rest of eternity. Remember that
committee members are people just like you and me. They try to keep
their emotions and personal beliefs out of their decisions, but it
doesn't always work.

Offend them with the content of your essay and you probably won't
win the scholarship. Again - I'm not saying it's right, but that's
just how it is. It's real life, it's unfair, and that's how it
goes. Rather than pretending otherwise, I'm advising you to
acknowledge this reality and go the safe route with safe topics
when you have a choice.
